ACOLYTES

What is an Acolyte? The meaning is "attendant." In ancient Rome the acolyte was the highest of the minor orders whose duties included carrying candles during processions, lighting altar candles, assisting the priests with water and wine and even carrying the Eucharist outside the church to people in prison.

By his teachings, Jesus brought light into the world enabling people to see the way we should live our lives. By his crucifixion and resurrection, Jesus brought light into a dark world giving people hope for salvation and life everlasting with the Lord.

In our church, Acolytes carry the flame of Christ symbolizing Jesus entering our Sanctuary. They light the altar candles beckoning us to focus our attention on hearing the Good News and to worship our Lord. The position of Acolyte is offered to children in 4th through 8th grades. Acolytes serve at the 5:30 pm Saturday night service as well as the 8:00 am and 11:00 am Sunday morning services

By being an Acolyte...
• You bring the light of Jesus into our Church.
• You serve our Lord by actively participating in the worship service.
• You serve our Church and its congregation by being responsible for the candle lighting
• It gives you a wonderful feeling inside to know that you can do such meaningful service for God, our Church and its congregation.

If you are interested in being an Acolyte, please contact the Acolyte Coordinator, Shirley Schauffler at 305-3009.
