In Times of Illness
God who makes the blind see, makes the lame to walk, and sets the captive free. In this moment I am not feeling well; I feel captive to the illness that is attacking my body. Not only do I feel weak physically, I also feel weak in spirit. I pray first that you would use the doctors, the nurses, and the medications to be your instrument of healing for my body. I also ask that your hand of healing might tough my spirit to give it healing and strength to overcome. Help me to recover so that I might be able to serve my family, my church and your world in the way that you have called me to. I thank you for hearing my plea and for answering it in your good and glorious way and will. Amen.
In Times of Crisis
Almighty God, I know that you are the one who brings order out of chaos. I am in the midst of chaos; a crisis in my life has arisen and I confess that I have tried to take care of it myself. But I realize that I need your strength, for Paul said, ?I can overcome all things through you who strengths each of us.? I thank you for that promise and I claim it now as my own. Will you come and be my strength in the midst of this crisis? Will you come and help me shoulder the burden that I am bearing? And will you grant me the peace and patience needed to persevere? I ask this in the name of your son, Jesus the Christ. Amen.
In Times of Celebration
Glorious and wonderful God! I praise your name for the wonders that you do in my life and the magnificence of your blessing. I know that I do not give you enough thanks for all that you do but in this moment of celebration, I honor you and the giver of abundant and joyous life. Thank you for being merciful and generous to me even when I do not deserve it. Help me to use this moment to be a constant reminder of all that you do and your presence in all things. In your wonderful name I pray. Amen.
In Times of Hopelessness
God of hope, I am feeling hopeless. In my head I know that you are the one who stretched across the span of my sin and reached out to me in love. You have made a way for me to live liberated and in a state of constant hope. But in this moment I am hopeless. I feel beaten down, distressed and powerless. I need your strength just so I can reach out to you. I need a measure of hope; maybe it could come from someone sent to speak a word of hope. Maybe I will find it through the words given in your testament to us. Maybe I will feel the movement of your spirit as I say ?Amen.? All I know is that you are the one who gives hope to the hopeless and I am ready to receive it. Thank you for hearing me in this state of hopelessness. Thank you for delivering me according to your will and way. In Christ I pray. Amen.
In Times of Thanksgiving
Lord of the harvest, I come humbly before you to give you thanks. We are reminded of the fact that you are the one who has planted the good seed of your grace in our lives. You have tended it making us strong through the watering of your Word. And now you desire to reap this great harvest through the service that we are called to. May your spirit guide each of us to move beyond serving ourselves and in to serving you and the world around us. As the Lord of the harvest you have called us ?to labor in your fields.? May it become so in our daily lives. With thanksgiving I pray. Amen.
In Times of Anger
God, in this moment I am mad! Something, someone or maybe even you ticked me off and I am coming to you to vent. I know that you know that I am mad but I still need to share this with you. If you don?t mind I just need to scream! Now that I have done that I come to you open. First forgive me for my indignation. Next, give me the power I need, the strength of spirit, or the just the nudge to go and take care of what I am mad about. Maybe it is a person I need to address in love; maybe it is a situation I need to deal with; or maybe it is something else. Move me to resolve it so that I might truly honor you in my life. Thank you for your willingness to listen and for the power of your spirit that will help me through this. In Christ's power, Amen.
In Times of Fear and Doubt
Lord God, my defender; my shield. I come to you in this moment of feeling defenseless; doubtful of my ability to overcome on my own. The Psalmist proclaimed you as ?refuge, rock, fortress, my strong tower.? In that same tradition I proclaim you to be all these things to me. I need the covering of your protective wing. I ask that you put a hedge around me so that the enemy can not prevail against me. I ask that your spirit empower me to overcome my fear and doubt. Fill me with faith so that I might live free and in your power. I ask this in the all powerful name of your son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
When Seeking Christ As Your Savior
God Almighty, I am nothing more than a sinner. I realize that it is who I am by nature, word and deed, and it is not something I can overcome on my own. My thoughts, my words and my actions are nothing more than ?filthy rags? as Paul says in Romans. Because of this I deserve to be separated from you now and throughout eternity. But amazingly, you gave your only Son to bridge the gap between you and me. What I could not do for myself you have done for me; you have atoned for my sinfulness. And now you extend to me the gift of your grace that my relationship with you, all people and your world might be made whole. You bring me to the starting line of your salvation. I wholeheartedly accept the gift of your grace which washes me clean and I ask now that you begin to fashion within me a sanctified heart shown through a sanctified life. Thank you for your love, mercy and grace and for the one who willingly made this possible, for it is in His name that I pray. Amen.
When Seeking Wisdom
God who knows all, I come to you seeking your counsel and your wisdom. The Proverbs read that ?he who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.? First, teach me to turn to your word for wisdom. Help me to seek with great passion your understanding so that I might become wise in your ways. Next, help me to seek out others who are wise because they have learned it from you. May I have mentors in my life whose lives truly reflect your love, grace, and wisdom. Spare me from entertaining fools for I know that they will do nothing but harm. Help me to discern the difference between the wise person and the foolish one. Time and life is precious; I desire not to waste a moment of it on fools and bad influences. Therefore I rely on your power and your spirit to keep me in the company of the wise. May your spirit work within me, teaching me through all things to know your heart and thoughts. In this I know that I will be able to live a life that will be pleasing to you and will honor your creation. Amen.
When Praying For Your Child(ren)
Gracious and loving God, as one of your children I want to express to you my heart of adoration. You are father, mother, brother, sister and friend to me. Thank you for the great benefits that you bestow upon me as your child. I ask in this moment that I might be as loving, as true, and as righteous with my own child(ren). Teach me to be faithful in loving each of them. Help me to discern how to loving guide and correct them. Give me the wisdom to share my faith with them in a way that will encourage them to also experience the depth of your love. Remind me always to love them by being respectful and loving to my spouse. I desire only the best for them even though I know this world does not. With your help, I pray that the influences might be minimal and that in the end they might also become good and faithful servants of you. This is truly my hearts desire. In Christ, Amen.
When Seeking Forgiveness
Merciful God, I need to confess to you my sin. I have sinned against you, heaven, earth and others. You know what that sin is and in my heart and head I can hear you naming it. As such you are also calling me to repentance. In this moment I repent of my sin and I seek your forgiveness for I know that you are eager to forgive. I also recognize that I may have offended someone else by my sin and therefore I have a need to seek their forgiveness as well. Convict me until I make this right; stir my spirit and make me restless until I have taken care of this. Only then will you grant me your peace and mercy that I might live in harmony with you, your world and your people. In Christ's forgiving name I pray, Amen.
In Times of Suffering the Death of a Loved One
Loving God, my loved one has gone to be with you and I feel all alone. I am excited for them because I know that their pain, suffering and sorrow have come to an end. But I have tears; lots of tears. I know that Paul says ?that we grieve with hope in you,? and I am praying today that you might give me your spirit. It is your blessed spirit that comforts in times of sorrow; that heals the broken-hearted; that can guide me in peace all the rest of my days. Thank Lord for loving me and granting me your presence of peace. In Christ I pray. Amen.
When Seeking Patience
Steadfast God, I am in a hurry so I will make this brief. I need to learn patience and I know that it was needed yesterday. It is definitely not one of my strongest suits but I hope you are willing to work with me. Actually Lord, I know that I need to take a breath, slow down and seek your spirit of patience. It may be counterintuitive for me, but I am really hoping that you can make this happen in my life. I need to learn to wait upon you, for your timing is certainly not the same as mine. I need to learn to wait upon others because they may be wired differently than I am, and therefore may take longer than I am willing to initially wait. I need to relax and know that it will come to fruition in good time. So help me to become a patient person and teach me in your perfect time. Thank you for your patience with me and for your willingness to mold me. I look forward to the day when your recreating love will take shape in me. Through Christ I pray. Amen.
When Seeking Inner Peace
Lord, my soul is restless today. I may know exactly why or I may not be able to put my finger on it. All I know is there is turmoil in my spirit and life. I feel like I am riding on the boat with your disciples in the midst of the Sea of Galilee. But I can?t make the chaos go away; I know that only you can. So I am asking you to come and speak stillness to the franticness of my spirit and life. Then, I ask that your spirit come to me in a way that I might feel inner peace. Thank you for caring enough to listen to me, for hearing me in my time of distress, and for granting to me what my soul and life needs most. Once I experience your peace, move me to be a peacemaker. In Christ our Lord I pray. Amen.
